ADSL is out, fibre is in. Here's how this affects you
Earlier this year, Telkom announced plans to replace its entire copper-based telephone line network with a new fibre optic cable network. It was hoped this would provide customers with access to a more stable broadband network that is not affected by cable theft and other interruptions that plagued the old copper system.
This makes sense, as fibre-based internet is far superior to its predecessor, offering users superfast connectivity at a cheaper rate. In fact, switching to fibre can save you as much as 40% on your telephone and internet bills.
Telkom plans to migrate all ADSL customers living in areas where fibre optic cables have been laid, to the new fibre network by the end of September. For those people living outside of these areas, Telkom will migrate customers to its LTE wireless broadband network.
